Here is one for the "Mother of the Year Award". According to Sunday San Jose Mercury News, 19 year-old Catalina Clouser was upset that her boyfriend had been arrested for driving after smoking marijuana. In fact, she was so upset that she went to a friend's house and smoked a bunch of marijuana herself. She then allegedly placed her car seat with her sleaping baby in it on top of her car. Ms. Clouser then allegedly drove off with the baby on her roof. The baby was found unharmed, still strapped into the seat. The bay was placed into the custody of child protective services.
This case comes out of Arizona, but if it happened in California Ms. Clouser may be charged with a felony. According to California Penal Code section 273a(a):
"Any person, under circumstances or conditions likely to produce great bodily harm or death, willfully causes or permits any child to suffer, or influces thereon unjustifiable physical pain or mental suffering, or having the care or custody of any child, willfully causes or permits the person or health of that child to be injured, or willfully causes or permits that child to be placed in a situation where his or her person is endangered, shall be punished by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, or in the state prison for two, four, or six year."
We shouldn't need laws to force us to be good parents. People should know that it is a bad idea to smoke pot and drive with their babies in their cars. Cases like this show that is not always the case.
