According to a press release from the Santa Rosa Police Department dated December 6th, 2011, there will be a driving under the influence (DUI) sobriety checkpoint conducted this Saturday, December 10th. The roadblock with be up between 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. The press release does not state where the checkpoint will be; only that it will be in an “undisclosed location”. Expect it to probably be on one of the main thoroughfares in the City. Please read my previous blog post for a more detailed analysis of DUI checkpoints.
This checkpoint is part of an increased DUI enforcement program in Santa Rosa targeted at intoxicated holiday drivers. According to an article in the Press Democrat, 16 additional officers will focus on DUI enforcement from now until the beginning of January.
Increased DUI enforcement will also be seen in the rest of Sonoma County. In addition to the Santa Rosa checkpoint Saturday night, expect to see “multiple” checkpoints in the County through the holiday season.
In addition to these checkpoints being an egregious violation of our civil rights, they impose a terrible burden on already busy (and sober) holiday drivers. If you find yourself arrested for DUI at a sobriety checkpoint make sure you take mental note of all details. These details in the hands of an experienced DUI attorney will give you the best chance of enjoying a happy holiday with your family.
