What does it mean to plead "no contest"?

A: Simply put, pleading “no contest” means you don’t deny that you committed a crime, but you don’t admit it either. Pleading no contest has the same immediate effect of pleading guilty. By entering this plea, you are declining the opportunity to fight, or “contest,” the charges against you. However, not all States permit a defendant to plead no contest.
